Learn more about our policies and how horses find their way to us!

What Has Changed?

We are both honored and overwhelmed by the public response since our founding. With over sixty new horses admitted in just three years-and over 50% of those requiring sanctuary-we have learned much about where we are most needed. With an eye toward preserving the resources our growing herd relies on and the sanity of our amazing volunteers, we have made changes to ensure that we are available to Thoroughbreds for years to come.

  • We no longer maintain a public watchlist.*
  • We solicit referrals from approved sources when capacity and resources allow.
  • These solicitations primarily focus on horses who are victims of neglect or abandonment.

*ALL horses previously submitted/accepted to our public watchlist have been admitted

Where Do Our Horses Come From?

THE ADOPTABLES

Our adoptable horses are primarily sourced through the Haughey family, our founders and the same family behind PTK LLC, a racing and breeding stable dedicated to the welfare of its horses since 1999. Never viewing aftercare as an afterthought, PTK carries the motto "Once Loved, Always Loved." The Haugheys took that promise a step further by establishing Pastured Place in 2022. It is our hope that their willingness to pursue their Thoroughbreds' individual talents will inspire other owners and breeders to do the same.

Because we know exactly where these horses come from, often their entire health, behavioral, and management history is available to us, including their immediate family's history in some cases. This is an invaluable asset when it comes to pairing our horses with adopters.

THE RESIDENTS

Our sanctuary horses have come to us through a variety of channels. Some were once adoptable but have since aged out of our adoption program or now require specialized care. Some were surrendered back to us due to injury or an inability to care for them. And, sadly, some arrived to us as victims of moderate to severe neglect or abandonment.

When it comes to admitting horses that fall into that last category, we solicit referrals from approved rescues, nonprofits, and livestock auction "watchdogs." We also offer assistance when called upon as long as our capacity and resources allow. We are very proud to have worked in coordination with dedicated organizations and individuals in the years since our founding, and we look forward to focusing on these horses more intensively in the years ahead.

Additional Notes

  • We accept recommendations of nonprofits and rescues for consideration as approved referral contacts. Get in touch using the form on our contact page if you want to put an organization on our radar!
  • These policies are subject to adjustment as we continue to learn and grow as an organization.
